Tree Planting and Young Tree Maintenance

HRG Tree Surgeons are a leading provider of professional tree planting and young tree maintenance services in Southampton and the wider Hampshire area.

Tree planting and young tree maintenance programmes may form part of the planning conditions for new buildings and developments. In addition, owners or managers of large properties and estates may include tree planting as part of their approach to grounds maintenance and sustainability.

A tree planting programme should be supported by regular young tree maintenance to ensure the good health of new trees as they become established.

According to the Arboricultural Association, newly planted trees should be proactively managed and maintained for at least two to three years.

During this time, the young trees will be subject to formative pruning, supported with stakes, ties and guards, and the tree’s overall health will be monitored. Young trees should be inspected at least once a year, with careful attention paid to ensuring the trees are well watered and mulched and the surrounding areas kept free from weeds and grass.

Whilst the typical period of young tree management is two to three years, in some cases it may be necessary to continue the management for longer.

Why do young trees need regular maintenance?

Young tree maintenance is essential to ensure the trees you plant to become well-established, are healthy, and stand the test of time.

Within a young tree maintenance plan, the tree will:

  • Be properly staked, tied and guarded. This protects the young tree from damage that can harm the tree’s long-term health, such as from mowers, strimmers and even wildlife. Stakes, guards and ties should be checked regularly to ensure they are the appropriate size for the growing tree providing adequate support and protection without being too small and causing damage.

  • Mulching. Young trees need adequate mulch to protect the toots from the elements. Mulch helps retain moisture at the base of the tree, protect it from extreme cold/frost, and prevent weeds.

  • Formative pruning. This is completed when there is no risk of frost and involves shaping the tree as it grows, removing competing shoots as necessary to prevent subsequent limb failure when the tree is mature.
