Sir Robert McAlpine

“We have found HRG to be a fantastic company to deal with. Their utmost priority was to ensure they delivered to a high standard, on time, whilst working alongside/ around our other onsite contractors. The high levels of knowledge possessed by HRG’s staff were particularly useful in assisting us to deal with the strict arboricultural legislation/guidelines imposed on the scheme.”

Southampton International Airport

HRG Tree Surgeons acted as Principal Contractor for Southampton International Airport. We have been responsible for all aspects of site safety, welfare and management and to carry out tree obstacle removal at various sites, specifically the ancient woodland of Marhill Copse.

This has been a politically sensitive project for SIA with planned expansion facing opposition both locally and further afield. We worked closely with ecologists, tree consultants, the Forestry Commission and the general public to allay concerns about the impact of the project, demonstrate how the site would be managed and to deliver the required tree works safely to a high standard whilst minimising the environmental and ecological impacts,

By leading community engagement days, we were able to demonstrate the value of the work being carried out and reassure those opposed to the project that the ancient woodland would be properly managed and protected. The woodland management plan, tree planting activities and close involvement of an ecologist on-site at all times, coupled with our careful management of all work on-site, means that the copse can be safely enjoyed by the public for many years to come.

Services provided to Southampton International Airport:

  • Total site management including setting up and managing all aspects of site safety and welfare.
  • Stakeholder management and communication.
  • Training and induction of all operatives and visitors coming on to site.
  • Management of ecological, environmental and bio-security risks.
  • Woodland management plan.
  • Tree planting.
  • Vegetation clearance.
  • Dead wooding and dangerous tree removal.
  • Replacement of gates for public use when the project was complete.

“HRG Tree Surgeons have worked with us on woodland projects around the airport. Their approach has been competent, knowledgeable and professional throughout as they continue to work with us to develop solutions that both achieve our requirements and optimise the health and ecology of the impacted woodland areas. HRG’s approach to safety and site management is first class and they have delivered works in a responsible and considered way.”

Ecology

As an organisation, we have extensive experience of working in SSSI sites, ancient woodlands, alongside waterways, of working with the Forestry Commission, National Trust and complying with the requirements of Natural England.

When working on your sites, we take steps to protect the ecology of the area where we are working. We will plan and advise you on the scheduling of your projects in order to take account of seasonal issues such as bird nesting season, and we work collaboratively with ecologists if your site requires it.

Our teams undertake additional training to ensure they are aware of, and alert to ecological issues when working on your site, including ideal habitats, roosting and breeding sites for species such as Crested Newts, smooth snakes, sand lizards and bats.

Before commencing work on your project a robust process of environmental risk assessments and method statements are completed by our experienced surveyor who assesses the tree(s) and surrounding wildlife. If wildlife or ecological concerns are identified, we will discuss them with you and refer to an Ecologist, maintaining comprehensive records at all times.

When appropriate to your project, we undertake surveys and take care of necessary licenses and permits to work, including:

• Bat surveys
• Dormouse surveys
• Great Crested Newt surveys
• Badger licences

“HRG were a pleasure to work with and I would have no hesitation in working with them again.”
